Expo Vénéjan & other

Had a very good opening with a good turnout. One piece sold and a couple more to be discussed later.
Am about to start on a commissioned piece from someone who fell in love with my Pfaff work. But as that show is now travelling to other venues I decided to embroider something similar for immediate purchase.

I've put my latest work up at Vénéjan but might well do some more work on it later. We'll see.

Here is the poster for the exhibition which I am sharing with a painter friend. I have a new piece to exhibit so I'm happy about that.

new work

I have just begun a new piece based on landscape in Normandy. I'm doing it with the idea of entering it for a competition which gives me a spur. More and more I want to try embroidering work without framing and this one certainly won't be going under glass or in a frame. But it's not always possible, so much depends on the size and whether a work would stand up to no framing.

I have another week's exhibition in November sharing space with a painter friend. Will it be as successful as my Goudargues experience? Horrible weather at the moment, dark and heavy rain. It was summer until just 2 weeks ago.

Pfaff Embroidery Challenge

Here are two photos from the Knitting & Stitching show at the Pfaff challenge opening. Very good level of work as was also the 'Art of the Stitch' exhibition.

My two regional days in Les Landes and the Pyrenées Atlantique were a great success and although I'm pretty tired after all this gadding about I'm feeling good.

Well my exhibition finished this evening and I'm very happy with the the way it has been received here considering it is out of season and it is only a small village. There have been lots of visitors - a lot through people telling their friends they had to come to see it! - and I ended up with nine sales plus of course sales of my book, kits and postcards.
So, now I have no time to relax but must prepare for my time in the Basque region and then I'm off directly to London for the opening of the Pfaff exhibition at Ally Pally with the Knitting & Stitching show.

Exposition personnelle

All is well re the exhibition and so far I have sold 8 pictures which I'm very happy about. This is the gallery just before the opening, beautiful space don't you think? Everybody has been very complimentary about my work.

Good exhibition so far with 4 embroideries sold to date. The opening evening was great with a full hall and lots of compliments.

L'expo est à: La Salle Capitulaire, Goudargues (30), 19-26 septembre TLJ 10h00-12h00: 16h00-19h00 Je ferai la permanence.

work again

Well after 5 weeks of Paris, England, the Pyrenées and a full house of children & grandchildren back to reality and lots of work preparation for a course here next week, my exhibition locally in Goudargues and two big regional days in the Landes and in Pau. About 250 backgrounds to prepare for the afternoon session of embroidery with the adhérents plus extra kits to sell.

Summer has been lovely and I thoroughly enjoyed being in Newcastle, Eng. where the weather was very kind to us and we picnicked on the beach at Whitley Bay. Here are some pics of two of our grandchildren who are simply lovely.

Still in Paris

With Lorette and Mimi in the gardens of the Palais Royale - or is it the Tuileries?! We went to both anyway.

View of the Eiffel Tower from the Pompidou Centre

Shop window selling shoes and ballet items near the Place Vendome.

Still enjoying our Paris sojourn and I don't think I've done so much walking for a long time. Had a lovely walk all round the Louvre area with Lorette and Mimi two stagiaires of mine who live in Paris and who have become good friends. Last night we went for dinner chez Marie-Noel another Parisien stagiaire. Lovely 11th floor flat she lives in with views towards La Defense.
Here are a couple more pictures.

In Paris

The Tuilleries by the Louvre and the Orangerie - having embroidered several aspects of these gardens they are quite special to me.

This is St Chapelle completely built it seems of huge stained glass windows - quite breathtaking.

We're on holiday now and enjoying our 'swap' appartment. We walk a great deal looking at things but having a fairly quiet day today with a concert on the Quay d'Orsay at 5.oopm. Here are some photos of one or two places visited.

What I've been up to

Just had no time to blog - courses here & away + a trip to England have kept me very busy. I'm happy to say that my piece was accepted for the Pfaff Art Embroidery Challenge so I shan't be seeing it again for at least a year.
As usual my courses here have been much appreciated from the point of view of Peter's cooking! He really pulled the stops out this last week - they wanted to pack him up and take him home!

The Quilt en Sud exhibition has so far yielded two good dates for the Autumn both regional meetings of combined patchwork clubs in the Landes & the Pyrenées so I'll be talking and teaching to over 100 people for each day! Quite a lot of preparation for that between now and the end of September.
We're away for a month in the summer and then Sep starts up again in earnest. As well as a course here I'll be going to Switzerland with our choir for a weekend concert and I have organised a week's exhibition of my work locally which I'm looking forward to.

I've just come back from St Jean de Luz where I was exhibiting this year with QES . I had a beautiful exhibition space all to myself and was able to show off my work to good advantage. It was a very successful show for me where I sold many books, kits and cards and for good measure QES bought a piece of work for their new collection. I was pretty overwhelmed by the public response and have made many contacts for the future. QES also looked after their artists royally and I have nothing but praise for their warm and generous welcome.

I wasn't able to explore the region much (although Peter had a great time) as I had so many people interested in my work that I didn't feel able to leave my exhibition to itself. Ah well perhaps we'll go back just to enjoy the Basque country.

Follow-on machine embroidery

Well since I have withdrawn the photos of the Pfaff embroidery here are a couple of pieces I did a while ago which shows what can be done in free machining.
I traced my design onto a silk background and then with much changing of threads and alterations of tensions during the work I filled it with solid stitching - which is why the 6 or 7 embroideries I did on the machine were only 9 x 7 cms. As I described before I find machining enjoyable but very bad for back & neck muscles!

Pfaff embroidery challenge

VERY SORRY BUT HAD TO WITHDRAW THE PHOTOS HAVING RE-READ THE RULES OF THE PFAFF.
DÉSOLÉ MAIS JE NE DOIS PAS PUBLIER LES PHOTOS SELON LES RÉGLES DE PFAFF

Well here is the finished embroidery which is difficult to photograph showing sufficient detail. The whole of the top area was machined freely in straight stitch using green overlayed with yellow incorporating the buttercups which had the effect of changing their look . I then used the zigzag freely to create all the golden buttercups on top of this machining spacing them out more as I went down the field.
I hand embroidered the stems and added some lovely gold thread here and there which I'm afraid simply doesn't show here. I'm quite pleased with it.

Hope you all had a good Easter - see you soon!

pfaff broderie, beau temps

Am making progress with the pfaff embroidery. I don't know how anyone can embroider only with the machine. I have to leave it after about half an hour of work with aching shoulders, a crick in my neck and somewhat boss-eyed from the long concentration. Hand embroidery is so calm! But I think the end result will be worth it - well I hope so as I ain't doing another!
Anyway here are a couple of pics of it before machining began.

Gorgeous weather at the moment. We have redstarts building nests all over the place - one right outside the kitchen door so I hope Bello our cat doesn't get them.

It's a fairly quiet time right now and I'm composing a landscape for the Pfaff embroidery challenge. I'm applying painted vliesofix to the background with cut materials and threads attached before I tackle the free machine embroidery - the most important part as far as Pfaff are concerned. I'll do some try -outs first.

Just had my son & partner with new daughter Eva (remember my post re her birth)? to stay for a few days so here she is again. She's such a sweet natured baby, so adorable. I'm missing her already since they left on Monday.
Elle me manque déjà depuis lundi.

Journée avec Enfibre

I belong to a group called Enfibre, a group of women interested in textile art and our 3 monthly meeting was held chez moi yesterday. Apart from talking about and showing textile work we always get around to talking about food. This is inevitable as we all bring a dish for a lunchtime meal and variuos recipes are discussed. The French no matter what group of people male or female love to talk about food and they know a lot about putting flavours together. I love all this but sometimes find their ideas a little inflexible usually based on matters of good digestion. Anyway here we are at lunch yesterday, beautifully sunny as you can see - courgette vélouté, leek and jambon cru salad, goat's cheese tart, mixed veg salad ....you get the picture. (oh and wine of course)

New work started

Had an enjoyable time in Roanne taking a day course on Saturday. People seem to like working my little landscapes and I always enjoy meeting new people.
Started a new piece of work today for 'Art of the Stitch' organised by Pfaff. The subject is landscape so it suits me very well but I'll have to do quite a bit of free machining on it as that is what the competition is all about.
Weather gorgeous again so long to be in the garden but at least can work with the studio door open which is lovely. Lots of birds courting so lots of birdsong. Wish it could be Sring forever!

Have been spending a couple of days in the garden as the weather has been too tempting to stay indoors. I've fed and mulched one of the flower beds - full of violets (white and violet) and some daffs and fed and mulched my roses with garden compost. Also had some very satisfying bonnies as well as stacking up leaves for future compost. Love jobs like this.

Not to neglect work though and have finished the tea label piece. I think it's ok but would like to try another one day. Better start collecting then.

Went to my weekly aquagym this morning and am feeling a bit pooped but must get some kits together for a course at the weekend.

Magazine article. Courses

I am composing an article for 'Stitch' for the series 'From sketch to stitch' which I am basing on some of the work that's come out of my Australian visits. The trouble is trying to keep it all under control as I've got so much info to choose from. No sooner have I chosen certain photos of my work than I think oh that looks very typical of the landscape and with back up work photos to go with it I change again. I need a book not a magazine! I'll keep you posted for publication date.

Starting to get reservations for courses here but since we are limited to accommodating only 4 at a time I am not over-run. 3 or 4 is a perfect number and the 5 days are very agreeable for everyone, plenty of attention from me and small enough for everyone to get to know each other well if they have all come individually. Quite often though it's 2 or 3 friends who come together and the week can be a hoot.
Quite a number keep in touch and we've stayed with some of them when I have something on in the area.

Australian workshops, ateliers

Now that I am the proud producer of a blog I thought it might be interesting to see how I got on in my workshops in Australia.
I absolutely love going there and the response from students is everything a tutor could hope for. I have taught both week long workshops at various Forums and 2 day workshops for ATASDA, Guild and private groups. They're a very positive bunch of individuals the Australians and here are a few examples of their work. These are from my last forum 2008 in Geelong.
I also had fun of course visiting the South coast - beautiful turqoise sea - Brisbane which I liked very much, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra. I stayed with friends and family everywhere which was great so didn't feel at all like a tourist which I wasn't I suppose anyway.
I went on a 2 day cattle drove with my niece who breeds and trains stock horses. About 300 cattle had to be taken to Nabiac (about 3 hours N of Sydney)for a sort of rodeo (camp draft). That was a fabulous experience and I didn't feel at all (well not much) stiff in the joints.
I also went on a whale watch off the Gold Coast and although I had seen a humpback leaping for about 10 minutes from the shore about a kilometre out the day before I didn't see anything like that from the boat but saw lots of whales coasting about. Lovely creatures.
What lovely memories.

Quels bels animals. Très impressionants
Ah quels beau souvenirs de 'down under'

Eva, new grandaughter, petite fille

Just had to show you Eva.

labels, etiquettes

Beginning the teabag label assembly. I've put them all on double sided tape and am in the process of attaching them to vliesofix. I think that's going to be the best way of getting them onto the background and I can decide once they're all secure on the vlieso how to position them. Not decided yet whether to work in blocks or chop them all up again and arrange individually. The thing is to get them into a state where I can place them to a background and fix in their definitive position without having to disturb the arrangement.

Liz at Musée Municipal Bourbonne les Bains

My expo is now up and I was absolutely astonished at how much work I actually have. When it's all up on walls (or not) everywhere in the house you don't realise just how much you've done over the years and of course during that time there have been sales so there has been even more than the present! I was very pleased seeing it all together and although the vernissage was fairly small I had lots of compliments. The French are not used to seeing this kind of art although my name is not unknown now here. Well it's up for 3 months, which is a long time out of circulation and I had to turn down some other opportunities which cropped up. I'm happy with it but not optimistic for sales - bad time of year and a quiet town.
So I'm now back home and have started trying to do something with all the teabag labels I've been collecting over the months. I belong to a group called 'Enfibre' and we have a theme to work to about recycling so mine is going to be from these labels. Hmm......we'll see how far I get, will keep you posted

I've been in touch with some friends in Australia who have been profoundly affected by the fires which have raged there. Tess and Lloyd in St Andrew's Melbourne are fine but many friends are not and have lost everything. Glenys Mann's (Forum) eldest son and family have lost absolutely everything and all the family is traumatised. See Gleny's blog for her account of the events
http://www.postcardsfromglenysmann.blogspot.com/ I don't think I have ever been so close to people involved in a disaster on this scale.

It's the count-down for my expo and I'm exhausted already from all the necessary preparations - but let's hope it's all going to be worth it and that I'll have lots of lovely photos from the vernissage to post.

It's been awful news from Australia where I have lots of friends from all my teaching. No deaths among people I know but loss of houses and devastion of the areas; It's so horrible I can't even imagine what it's like to see that kind of destruction and agony.

My own computer is sick so in using Peter's old (beloved) iMac I have no access to any of my pictures so it's all text right now.

New embroidery

This is my latest landscape from my first visit to Australia in 2006. It's all hand embroidered on a very fine open weave silk which I bought in Australia when I was teaching at the Geelong Forum. I invariably have great problems deciding how to frame - or not - once a work is finished but this one 'The burnt tree' I worked directly onto the length of silk and am leaving it as a hanging. No decisions there then!
As usual it's mainly in straight stitch with the tree itself cut out of lutradur and the background trees torn, spray painted vliesofix.

I've been cleaning and remounting works for the exhibition and getting rid of card mounts to leave the embroideries mounted alone onto thick watercolour paper. But I've kept the glass on some of them and some not, it all depends how they look 'naked'

languages

I have decided to try & write my blog in French as well as English. The French will really be a précis of the English as it is not easy to express oneself properly in a foreign language.

We are off to the Pyrenees tomorrow to see my youngest son and his very new daughter Eva. We now have 5 grandchildren between us 3 of whom are are my 'own blood'.
In the meantime I'll carry on preparing for the exhibition in Bourbonne and hope to start some new work once that's up - back to things French I think. Not a lot of inspiration this last time from Australia as although I saw new areas I couldn't see embroideries coming from them. Next time....?

googling

I was trying to find my forgotten blog email address - I'm very new to all this - and on googling my name I was astonished at the number of references to me on all sorts of sites that I know nothing about. It's all good I suppose but nothing is secret any more as the search engines pick up the least mention. So I'm out there in the world without me being aware of the half of it.
I now know for examle that I've got 5 'Art embroidery' for sale on a secondhand bookseller's site in the USA! Amazing isn't it?

Today is beautiful and since I'm not starting anything new until I've put up the exhibition in Bourbonne I think I'll go for a walk in the woods and the vineyards.

Events to come

I have been preparing for my exhibition for the Musée de Bourbonne les Bains opening 14 February. It will run until May 8 and immediately after that I am exhibiting at Quilt en Sud 14 - 17 May in St Jean de Luz on the West coast not far from the Spanish border.

I was asked to exhibit in Bourbonne a thermal cure town, after taking part in a Salon by the Assoc. Au fil à l'aiguille in 2007.

Quilt en Sud is biannual show and this is the first time I have exhibited there.

Here are a couple of pieces of my work out of about 45 which will be going to these shows.

Landscape embroidered from travels in Australia

Now I will tell you a little about myself. I am an embroidery artist living in France where I have lived with my husband Peter for 23 years or so. I exhibit and teach my embroidery both here and abroad (Australia). You can see a lot more about me on my website as above.
